# How to Join a Rust Server

> Learn how to connect to Rust servers through Steam, direct IP connection, and server browser. Includes troubleshooting tips for connection issues and server finding methods.

Connecting to a Rust server opens up multiplayer survival gameplay. This guide covers all methods to join Rust servers and troubleshoot common connection problems.

## Finding the IP address

Before you can join your [Rust server](https://berrybyte.net/rust-server-hosting), you'll need the server's IP address and port number.

1. Login to the [game control panel](https://game.berrybyte.net)
2. Locate the IP:port below the name of the server
3. Click on the highlighted area and it will copy the IP to your clipboard

## Joining the multiplayer Rust server

### Method 1: Server Browser (Easiest)

1. Launch Rust from Steam
2. Click **Play Game** from main menu
3. Select server type (Official, Community, or Modded)
4. Use filters to find your server
5. Click **Connect** on your chosen server

### Method 2: Direct IP Connection

1. Open Rust and go to main menu
2. Press **F1** to open console
3. Type: `client.connect IP:PORT`
4. Press **Enter** to connect

### Method 3: Steam Friends

1. Open Steam friends list
2. Right-click friend playing Rust
3. Select **Join Game**

## Common Issues

* **"Connection Failed" error**: Server may be offline or IP address incorrect
  * **Solution**: Check server status and verify IP address

* **"Server Full" message**: Server has reached player capacity
  * **Solution**: Wait for slot or try different time

* **"VAC Authentication Error"**: Steam authentication issues
  * **Solution**: Restart Steam, verify game files, wait 5-10 minutes

* **High ping/lag**: Network connectivity issues
  * **Solution**: Choose closer servers, use wired connection, close bandwidth apps

## Server Types

* **Official**: Facepunch servers, vanilla gameplay, monthly wipes
* **Community**: Player-hosted, custom rules, varied wipe schedules
* **Modded**: Enhanced gameplay with plugins and quality-of-life improvements
